Thanks, Alison! It's so great to see your comments here. I agree there are a lot more choices available but I still hope we keep moving forward. While I used natural childbirth and a midwife, I really would love to live in a world where all women could choose the type of care they wanted-traditional ob/hospital, birth center with easy access to a higher level of care if needed, or home birth and not just take what insurance or their community offers. I also agree that "baby-friendly" isn't all about breastfeeding and while "baby friendly" is important, "MOTHER friendly" is just as valuable. I honor a mom's informed choice to not breastfeed for whatever reason. However, if part of that reason is due to a trauma history I hope that caregivers can work at resolving that history before it becomes a factor in breastfeeding, l&d choices, etc. So many women don't know a history of trauma can affect breastfeeding/pregnancy and that there is help available so it can be addressed. When it comes down to it I guess I'm mostly an advocate for women's informed choices-and if that choice is to have a deluxe epidural and bottle feed with love or to naturally birth and breast feed or something in between then go for it, lady!

What a beautiful article Lindsey. I wasn't sure what to expect when I first started reading it. It is indeed amazing how times change isn't it, and that nowadays at least there are a full range of rituals for a Mom who loses her baby in the hospital.<br />One thing I don't like about the hospital where I work, they call themselves "baby-friendly" which means they believe all women should breast-feed. While this may be an honorable goal, I feel it doesn't give women the choices they deserve.
