What is EMDR?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.  It is a psychotherapeutic technique that is very effective at helping people reduce their emotional distress around traumatic events such as a sexual assault, surviving a violent crime, combat trauma, abuse, car accidents, and other types of trauma.  EMDR also has applications for depression, anxiety, phobias, and chronic pain.  EMDR has been extensively studied and was given the highest level of recommendation by the American Psychiatric Association in the treatment of trauma.  During EMDR, the client is in control.  Memories are not “lost” forever but clients often report that they lose their vividness or their emotional charge.  For more information, go to www.emdr.com, www.emdria.org or contact me if you have questions about how EMDR can help you.

What is a marriage and family therapist (MFT or LMFT)?

MFTs are healing arts practitioners licensed through the board of behavioral sciences in the state of California. Requirements include either a master’s degree or doctorate degree, 3,000 hours of supervised experience post-degree, and passing both a written and clinical vignette examination. MFTs treat individuals, couples, and families. Please see www.camft.org for more information!

What forms of payment do you take?  What are your fees?

I currently accept credit cards, paypal to lsplumer@yahoo.com, checks or cash.  I am an out-of-network non participating provider for Tricare (this means you pay me directly and submit a receipt to Tricare for reimbursement) and I bill California Victim’s Compensation Fund (aka Victim Witness) directly.

My current session fees are $150 per 50 minute session and $140 for initial evaluation. Discounts are available for pregnant moms/families with a child under the age of two, students, military and veterans, and people with limited income.  Please ask about your individual situation. Other than Victim’s Compensation and Placer County Adult System of Care patients, I do not bill insurance companies directly but if you have a PPO or HSA/FSA I can provide a receipt that you may be able to turn in for reimbursement depending on your individual benefits.  By not billing insurance directly I am able to provide more privacy for my clients and without a third party dictating how we do therapy.  Many PPO insurance companies will reimburse for out of network services and I can help you with this process.    I am also an out of network provider for Tricare, which means depending on your plan you pay me directly, I provide a receipt, and you can turn that into Tricare for possible reimbursement. How do I choose a therapist?

Research has shown that the best predictor of a good therapeutic outcome is how comfortable a client feels with their therapist.  I offer a free 20-minute consultation by phone to find out if you and I are a good fit.  Feel free to e-mail at lsplumer@yahoo.com or call 916-952-7187 to set up your consult.  If during this 20 minute consult it is determined we will not be a good fit together, I am happy to provide referrals to trusted colleagues.  I have worked in this field and in this area since 2000 and have many contacts and I am more than happy to share this information with you so you can have the best possible outcome without having to hunt down the information on your own.
